Brick Repointing

We offer a range of brickwork repointing services on the North Wales coast, on houses, gable walls, garden walls and chimneys, using cement or lime mortar to suit the age of the property. Replacing brickwork can be a difficult process, and repointing is one of the most tedious but essential brickwork services that all properties will need to have carried out at some point or another. No matter how big or small the brickwork repointing service might seem, I can help.

Chimney Repair

A chimney in bad repair can affect the foundations of your house if left to become decrepit. A chimney with loose bricks is also dangerous, not only could a toppled chimney stack cause your roof to cave in, it could also have catastrophic consequences in terms of human injury or even cause injury to pets.

Chimney brick spalling is by far one of the most common issues I encounter with chimneys. I have over 30 years experience in brick pointing and mortar sealing so loose bricks and crumbling mortar need not be a threat to the structure of your home.

In addition to brick work pointing and sealing, we can also help fix leaks to your chimney flashing and restore the integrity of your chimney flaunching.

Brick Repair

Bricks are a durable building material, but they can still be damaged over time by the elements, wear and tear, or even structural problems. If your bricks are cracked, crumbling, or missing, it’s important to have them repaired as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

There are several different ways to repair bricks, depending on the severity of the damage. For minor cracks, a simple filling compound may be sufficient. However, for more extensive damage, it may be necessary to replace individual bricks or even entire sections of brickwork.

FAQ

Repointing questions answered

Straight answers to the questions we are asked most often about repointing, chimney repair and brick repair in North Wales.

What is repointing and when does brickwork need it?

Repointing is renewing the mortar joints between bricks or stones once the original mortar has weathered, cracked or crumbled away. The old mortar is raked out to a sound depth and fresh mortar is packed in and finished. Brickwork usually needs repointing when joints look recessed, sandy or crumbling, when bricks are loose, when moss grows in the joints, or when damp appears inside the house. Exposed coastal walls on the North Wales coast tend to need it sooner than sheltered ones.

Do you use lime mortar or cement mortar?

Both. The right mortar depends on the age and construction of the property. Older solid-wall and stone buildings are normally repointed with lime mortar so the wall can breathe and move, while most modern cavity-wall brickwork suits a cement-based mortar. Richard will advise on the correct mix for your property when he quotes.

Which areas do you cover?

RJH Repointing is based in Prestatyn and covers the North Wales coast from Conwy to Flint, including Llandudno, Colwyn Bay, Abergele, Rhyl, Rhuddlan, St Asaph, Holywell and Flint.

How do I know if my chimney needs repointing or repair?

Common signs are spalling or flaking brick faces, crumbling mortar joints, white salt staining, damp patches on the chimney breast or in the loft, loose or cracked flaunching around the pots, a stack that looks to be leaning, and water getting in around the lead flashing. A chimney with loose bricks is a safety risk, so it is worth having it looked at promptly.

How much does repointing cost?

The cost depends on the size of the area, the height and access (for example whether scaffolding is needed), the condition of the existing joints and the type of mortar required. Every job is quoted individually after a visit, and quotes are free with no obligation. Call 01745 421 850 or 07582 081 836 to arrange one.

How long does repointing take?

A chimney stack or a single gable wall can often be completed in a few days. Repointing a whole house takes longer and depends on the size of the property, access and the weather. You will be given a realistic timescale with your quote and kept updated on progress during the job.

Can repointing be done in winter?

Repointing can be done in winter, but mortar needs to cure above roughly 3 to 5 degrees Celsius and be protected from frost and heavy rain. Work is therefore weather dependent and cold snaps can delay a job. Spring to autumn is the most reliable time of year, but enquiries are welcome all year round.

How do I get a quote from RJH Repointing?

Call Richard on 01745 421 850 or 07582 081 836, or email richard.reimprovements@gmail.com. He will arrange a visit to inspect the brickwork and provide a free, no-obligation quote.
